In six weeks Computerbank New England will have a new headquarters when the first stage of the $150,000 upgrade of the Recycling Centre at the Uralla Landfill site is completed.
Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay visited the Centre this week to check the progress of the project funded through $50,000 from the State Community Partnership Building Program (CPBP), matched by Uralla Council and with an additional Commonwealth infrastructure grant.
“The outstanding work of Computerbank New England in rebuilding old computers and recycling parts can continue under much improved conditions,” he said.
“Locating the headquarters at the Uralla Recycling Centre on the Landfill site will create efficiencies and opportunities to pelletise the unusable computer parts for further recycling.”
The MP said the CPBP infrastructure stimulus package had delivered a total of $417,000 for projects in the Northern Tablelands which would be converted to $1.2 million through council and community contributions.
“Uralla’s project to relocate Computerbank New England, double the size of its recycling centre, open an Op Shop for reusable items and provide an undercover drop off area for tip users is an excellent initiative which will benefit the local community and the environment,” Mr Torbay said.
Mayor Ron Filmer said the increased rate of recycling by the Uralla community had increased the life of the current landfill cell by a further five years. The volume of waste going into the landfill dropped from 4,117 cubic metres for 30 June 2008 to 2,683 cubic metres for the 2008/2009 year.
Council is to consult with the community on a plan to cut green waste going to landfill by converting the current large wheelie bins to recycling items, providing smaller bins for household rubbish and introducing a mobile mulcher service for green waste on cleanup days. There are also plans to conduct composting and worm farming workshops for community members.
“We are very encouraged by the good recycling results in the Uralla community and with an upgraded Recycling Centre and these other initiatives we hope to cut the amount of waste going to landfill even further,” Cr Filmer said.
