Tenterfield pre-school $10,000 upgrade to start immediately

Thursday 17th December 2009
It’s Leah Kernot’s last week as Director of the Tenterfield Pre-School Kindergarten after almost 40 years service and she regards today’s state funding announcement of $10,000 as the best retirement present she could possibly receive.
The funding through the State Government’s Community Building Partnership scheme will assist the Pre-School to upgrade its kitchen and separate it from the craft room it currently shares.
Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay welcomed the announcement totalling $417,000 for 13 projects in the electorate which with support funding from local councils and organisations will equate to a total of $1.2 million in infrastructure upgrades.
The aim of the stimulus package is to generate jobs and business activity as well as upgrade local infrastructure.
“Leah tells me the work starts almost immediately and should be finished when the pre-schoolers start their new term next year,” he said.
“Supporters of the Pre-school have raised almost $15,000 this project and it’s great to see it can now go ahead.”
The Kindergarten is 50 years old and its kitchen was last upgraded in the 1970s. After a recent inspection it was found that locating the craft room with the kitchen was against regulations.
“There was some urgency to complete this project to meet the regulations and also to provide a kitchen that was a bit more up to date,” Ms Kernot said.
Twenty nine children attend the Tenterfield Pre-School Kindergarten each day.
“We’d like to thank Richard for all his support and we are just delighted to receive this funding,” Ms Kernot said.
