Tenders have been called for the $7.5 million upgrade of the Gwydir Highway west of Inverell at Lamonts Lane, Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay announced today.
The reconstruction of the 7.5 kilometre stretch of road is being funded through the increased toll on the Sydney Harbour Bridge introduced in 2002.
"The Gwydir Highway is a strategic connection between Grafton and Moree and the replacement of ageing infrastructure will greatly improve road safety for residents and through traffic," Mr Torbay said.
Earthworks, drainage, pavement reconstruction and associated works will result in widening the road, improving the surface and providing improved access to properties.
The lanes will be 3.5 metres wide with 2 metre shoulders and a 6 metres clear zone from the edge of the road on either side, resulting in a vast improved to the current situation, Mr Torbay pointed out.
Tenders close at 2.30pm on Wednesday, June 23 and the contract is expected to be signed by August.
A pre-tender meeting will be held at 11am on Wednesday, June 9 at the Inverell Shire Council Chambers.
