Six councils funded for International Women’s Day events

Monday 15th February 2010
Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay has welcomed funding of $1000 each for six local councils to fund International Women’s Day events on Monday, March 8.
Armidale Dumaresq, Glen Innes Severn, Guyra, Gwydir, Inverell and Uralla Councils will receive the funding.
Armidale Dumaresq Council is organising a lunch with staff from St Vincent De Paul, the Salvation Army, Lifeline and the Smith Family, including a guest speaker who will talk about India and empowering women to end poverty by 2015.
Glen Innes Severn Council will run a free women's forum involving speakers from traditional clubs such as Quota, VIEW, the Country Women’s Association and Lioness Club. Disadvantaged women will be supported to attend.
Guyra Council is holding morning teas at Guyra and Tingha with guest speakers.
Gwydir Council’s lunch for women adopts the theme "Women in the World Today" to showcase what it is to be a woman in a small town. This will also incorporate the local Mother of the Year competition.
At Inverell the Council has organised a breakfast with guest speakers inviting schools, business owners and businesses.
Uralla Council is hosting a lunch with a guest speaker to provide an opportunity for women to discuss and celebrate the input and achievements of women in the workforce and in voluntary roles within the community.
“This is a great line up of events to mark an important day in the calendar and to focus on women’s issues and achievements,” Mr Torbay said. “It is pleasing to see this government support provided.”
