Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay has welcomed the allocation of five new probationary constables to the New England Local Area Command.
The new recruits will be stationed at the Armidale, Glen Innes and Inverell police stations by the end of the month.
The MP also welcomed the arrival of Inspector Garry Huard this week to head the Glen Innes Police Station following the retirement of Inspector George McGilvray after more than 10 years in the position.
“George has made a great contribution to policing in the Glen Innes and district and across the Command,” Mr Torbay said.
“It’s great that he has chosen to stay in town for his retirement.”
Inspector Huard served as Senior Constable at Glen Innes before transferring to Moree as a sergeant in 2003. He was promoted to inspector in 2006 and has worked at Batemans Bay until his return to Glen Innes.
Mr Torbay joined police and community leaders at quarterly Community Safety Precinct Committee meetings in Glen Innes and Armidale this week for an update on crime statistics and issues across the Northern Tablelands.
“Alcohol driven assaults and domestic violence incidents spiked in June and July in the region but a targeted police response has seen that significantly reduced this month,” he said.
“The number of break and enters have also lessened over the last three months but there is still concern over the number of incidents of stealing from motor vehicles and malicious damage.
“At the meetings the police acknowledged that community reporting of incidents greatly assisted their investigations and it’s good to see that cooperation to reduce the level of crime in our region.”
