The $100,000 plus upgrade at Gum Tree Glen is a prime example of the local community, the local council and government working together on a project, Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay said when he opened the improvements in Glen Innes this week.
Glen Innes Severn Council (GISC) matched the $50,000 allocated through the Community Building Partnerships Scheme and federal funding assisted with a new fence and playground equipment.
The works include an internal upgrade, a new commercial kitchen , floor coverings, improvements to the laundry, play resources and craft facility upgrades including new sinks and new doors.
“This is a great facility for Glen Innes and district parents and children,” Mr Torbay said.
“It also has a very supportive community as all the work on the project was contributed by volunteer labour and most of the supplies and goods were provided by local tradesmen and businesses.
“This goodwill creates wonderful value and shows how a local community can double or triple the value of any funding it receives.”
Gum Tree Glen is a GISC supported child care facility offering 36 places for long day care, and the building also houses an early intervention centre.
The opening was attended by Mayor Steve Tom, senior council staff, Team Leader Angela Sisson, staff and parents.
