A $20,000 state government grant for extra lighting at Kerry Mead Park in Glen Innes will expand training opportunities for local rugby league players, Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay said following a meeting with players and club officials on site this week.
The MP said the Sport and Recreation grant would enable the Glen Innes Rugby League Football Club to install lighting for the first time on its bottom field.
It means both ovals at the Park can be used for training by junior and senior league players.
“The problem at present is that all twilight training happens on the top field which restricts the number of sessions and also adds to the wear and tear on the main ground,” Mr Torbay said.
“This new lighting will open up the bottom field for training and relieve the pressure on the top field which is used by the Magpies for their fixtures in the Group 19 competition.”
The Club has developed the Park since it moved from the Glen Innes Showground in the 1970s installing a clubhouse and other facilities.
It is home base for around 250 players in minor and senior league.
Glen Innes fields junior rugby league teams at 8,10,12,14 and 16 year level, Ladies League Tag, Under 18s, Reserve Grade and A Grade.
Kerry Mead Park is also used by local schools for gala days.
“It’s always great to see the enthusiasm of the local players and the dedication of club members who work so hard to keep the game alive for players of all ages,” Mr Torbay said.
“I’m very supportive of maintaining and upgrading sporting infrastructure to provide the very best amenities and opportunities for local sporting groups.”
