Grants totalling $89,985 for NT environmental projects

Wednesday 28th October 2009
Environmental projects in Inverell, Jennings, Walcha and the New England Strategic Alliance Councils have received a total of $89,985 in State funding, Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay announced today.
The grants from the NSW Environmental Trust support exceptional environmental projects that do not receive funds from the usual government sources.
The two teacher Jennings Public School which has 25 students receives $2,500 for an innovative scheme to filter grey water through a reed bed to the school’s native garden.
Teacher Rebecca MacLachlan said the garden had been created to preserve rare local plant species including banksias and grevillias.
McIntyre High School at Inverell also will receive $2,500 for its program of initiatives to improve the school’s carbon footprint.
The Amaroo Local Aboriginal Land Council has been allocated $34,985 for the Summerville community restoration project for the Apsley River, near Walcha.
CEO Kim Sampson said young people from the Summerville community would receive training to undertake the work of stabilising the river bank and removing noxious weeds from a section of the river.
A further $50,000 towards the New England Sustainability Strategy for the Armidale Dumaresq, Guyra, Uralla and Walcha Councils will take the project to the next step for adoption and implementation by the councils.
“Our communities are taking a proactive approach to resolving environmental degradation issues and adopting more sustainable practices,” Mr Torbay said.
“All of these projects are making a very worthwhile contribution to reducing the carbon footprint in our communities and it is pleasing that they have received this funding support.”
