I am pleased to see that police numbers in the New England Local Area Command are at record levels and all categories of crime have dropped except domestic violence assaults in some areas. The increased police numbers have led to a more visible presence on the streets which is making a difference. Regular Police and Community Team meetings between police and community leaders have led to mutual understanding and a more united community approach on law and order issues.
Circle Sentencing has been introduced in Armidale for Aboriginal offenders. This alternative sentencing procedure involving victims, elders, the magistrate and prosecutor has delivered excellent results in reducing recidivism wherever it operates.
A new $9.4 million Police Station is nearing completion in Armidale and there have been major upgrades to the Inverell, Glen Innes and Tenterfield Police Stations.
The release of police from prison escort duties which have passed to Correctional Services has made a significant difference, freeing up many more officers for local duties.
New State laws increasing police powers and penalising negligent parents are welcome as this is emerging as one of biggest problems we face as a community. Alcohol Forums I held in Armidale and Inverell highlighted the fact that many irresponsible parents and other adults supplied under age young people with alcohol. We have to continue the war against alcohol and drug abuse not only as a public order issue but because it ruins so many lives, particularly amongst young people.
